Hemi is a descendant of the Central North Island tribes of Ngati Whare, Ngati Manawa, Ngati Kurapoto, Ngati Hineuru, Ngati Tuwharetoa, Ngati Haua, Ngati Uenuku, Ngati Rangi and Mokai Patea Nui Tonu.
He also has whakapapa to Taranaki, Nga Puhi, Hauraki, Te Arawa, Ngati Awa, Ngai Tuhoe, Te Whanau a Apanui, Ngati Porou and Kai Tahu.
Hemi has owned several businesses in the Automotive, Financial, Logistics, and Sales ﬁelds. He utilises these skills and former military experience to enhance his participation on the many Trusts and Boards that he is a part of, including, as a delegate of Ngati Tuope and co-claimant in the Taihape Inquiry, Chairman of the Rangipo Waiu B6B2 and Owhaoko D6 Sub 1 blocks of Mokai Patea and Chairman of Tokaanu marae, Trustee of Lake Taupo Forest Trust and Waione Incorporation.
