Where Are We Now? Our Settlement Journey Since the Agreement in Principle Signing
Since signing our Agreement in Principle on 6 November 2025, Mōkai Pātea has continued to progress towards a full and final settlement with the Crown.
The signing of the Agreement in Principle (AIP) was a significant milestone for our whānau and iwi. It marked the culmination of many years of mahi and provided an agreed foundation for the next stage of our settlement journey.
Since the signing, work has continued across a number of areas as we move towards the development of a Deed of Settlement.
Continuing the Settlement Journey
The AIP is not the end of the settlement process. It provides the basis for the detailed work required to finalise the terms of our settlement with the Crown.
Our negotiation and project work continues to focus on progressing the matters outlined in the AIP and working through the detail required before a Deed of Settlement can be finalised.
This is an important stage of our journey, and there remains significant mahi ahead before settlement can be completed.
Planning for Our Post Settlement Future
Alongside the ongoing settlement work, planning has now begun for our Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE).
The PSGE will be an important part of our future once settlement is reached. It will provide the governance structure for managing the settlement assets and supporting the interests of our people into the future.
The Trust has begun planning for this next stage, including considering what a future PSGE could look like, the governance arrangements that may be required, and how our people will be involved in shaping its design.
This work is being approached carefully, with the interests of our four iwi and future generations at the centre.
Keeping Our Claimant Community Informed
As this work progresses, the Trust is committed to keeping our claimant community informed and providing opportunities for our people to understand and participate in the process.
Our hui a rohe will continue to provide an important opportunity for whānau to receive updates, ask questions and engage with the work underway.
There is still a way to go, but the direction is clear. We are moving from the achievement of an Agreement in Principle towards the next stage of our settlement journey, finalising our settlement, planning for our post settlement governance arrangements, and preparing for the future of Mōkai Pātea.
We look forward to continuing this mahi together on behalf of Ngāti Whitikaupeka, Ngāti Hauiti, Ngāti Tamakōpiri and Ngāi te Ohauke.
